But that is simply NOT how Dark Souls (DS1 or DS2) is built, it is meant to fully load one area at a time. As you move they progressively load the rest as you get closer and dump or unload the areas you leave behind.

Yes an argument can be made that other games do large "seamless" worlds better (skyrim, fallout, gta, etc.) But keep in mind even those games only fully load the area around you. How can the game do this any differently than it already does? What would be the point of adding looooong, empty, area-connecting, loading-screen-replacement paths? Would they make the game word more believable because the distances make sense or more boring? What they have done is simplify/condense the walk/travel time between certain areas to give the feel of traveling there without a loading screen, which helps keep you immersed AND constantly on edge (I'm true DS fashion) BUT without adding long/boring empty areas. With the exception of maybe a couple, how many of those connecting paths are either:Ī)An empty, enclosed hallway/path, with some twists and turns.ī)An empty elevator with no, or very little, view of the outside. Think about how you travel/connect from one area to the next. The game only loads one area at a time and it WILL ALWAYS need to load the next area quickly without you being able to see the actual loading (like the structures, objects and NPCs popping in one after the other) and if this path you travel while the game loads has other objects or NPCs on it, the loading would take even longer. The reason for this design decision, I've always believed, is a slightly complicated one.Įven though the developer (From Software) aims to create a seamless interconnected world.

Well what I've noticed is that even though the distances between areas are great, like how far away Heides Tower looks from the stone monument in Majula (side note: take a momentf if you haven't, stand at the monument by the blue covenant guy and see how many other areas you can see from Majula) but it's still just a short walk down some corridors and a sewer.
